French consumers remain keen on electronics

PARIS: Sales of consumer electronics have remained resilient in France, indicating the value shoppers place on these goods despite the pressures on their budgets.

A study by GFK Temax found that total spending in the electronics category in the country grew by 4% year-on-year to €6.2bn ($7.9bn; £5.1bn) in Q2 2010. (Original article available in French here.)

Consumer electronics were one of the primary drivers of this trend, up by 8.6%, a trend encouraged by the World Cup in South Africa.

Digital television sets proved popular, while 3D TVs and multimedia devices such as the iPad witnessed a surge in demand that is likely to accelerate during the rest of the year.

Small appliances posted an uptick of 6.2%, with the IT sector up 3.9%, and cameras and telecoms also enjoying improved figures.

Promotions have played a role in such trends, according to GfK.

But rising prices could slightly dampen the momentum gained by the industry - should manufacturers decide to reduce their reliance on price appeals.
