PARIS: French shoppers have tightened their chic belts as confidence among the country's consumers in February fell to its lowest level in more than twenty years.

National statistics office INSEE says producer prices climbed at their fastest annual pace in over seven years during January, signalling a rise in the cost of food and energy.

Consumer confidence fell to minus 35 in February from -34 in January; while producer prices rose 0.5% in January over the previous month and were up 4.9% compared with the year earlier period.
