Europe's largest TV commercial broadcaster RTL Group insisted Wednesday that its UK unit channel Five -- jointly owned with Britain's United Business Media which has a 35% stake -- is not about to be put up for sale.
Refuting a spate of recent rumours, RTL chief executive Gerhard Zeiler vowed: "We are committed to be a player in the UK. We are committed to Five, and we are not sellers.
Indeed, Zeiler seemed to imply that expansion could be on the cards for Five, and hinted at possible startups or acquisitions. "We are not there yet in the whole UK market," he said. "We’re really looking carefully, as shareholders, into all the opportunities."
RTL is a wholly owned unit of German media mammoth Bertelsmann.
