Facebook Targets Nokia Tie-Up

13 February 2009

PALO ALTO, California: Facebook, the social networking website, is in talks with cellphone manufacturer Nokia about embedding elements of its online portal onto the company's mobile phone handsets, according to reports.

The Wall Street Journal says the companies are considering options such as combining Nokia users' "phonebooks" with their Facebook contacts list, so they can see which of their friends are using the website, and contact them via the portal.

Nokia, however, is thought to be concerned about how much user information its potential partner would have access to should a deal be agreed, and is also said to be considering the viability of establishing its own social networking platform.

A spokeswoman for Facebook simply said the company is "dedicated to working with and developing partnerships with mobile operators and device makers all over the world."

The social networking pioneer is also rumoured to be in talks with Motorola about a similar tie-up, and is working with Palm on creating an operating system that would work across various types of cellphones.
