FTC Do-Not-Call List Receives 15,000 Complaints in a Week

More than 15,000 Americans have filed complaints in the week since the Federal Trade Commission began enforcing its do-not-call telemarketing registry.

The scheme forbids marketers to call numbers on the regulator's list. Each violation will incur a fine of up to $11,000 {€9,487; £6,586).

The FTC began accepting complaints on October 11 – later than the scheduled October 1 due to legal wrangling [WAMN: 08-Oct-03] – but is yet to decide whether any are justified. Marketers must check their lists against the FTC database once every ninety days, so their files may not include consumers who signed up only recently.

Meanwhile, the register continues to grow. Some 53.7 million numbers are now signed up.

Since October 1, an additional 3,218 complaints have been made to the Federal Communications Commission, which voted to extend the list to marketers under its authority [WAMN: 30-Jun-03].
