The US Federal Bureau of Investigation claimed yesterday that the worldwide spread of the new ‘Killer Resume’ email virus has been held in check. Entitled "Resume - Janet Simons", the email carries an attached file purporting to be a job application.

If opened, it spreads to all entries in a user's email address book; and when the message is closed, key files are deleted, making the infected computer inoperable. Like the notorious ‘Love Bug’ it spreads via Microsoft's Outlook program.

According to the FBI, an unspecified number of corporate e-mail systems have been stricken, although the anti-virus industry is expected to issue a new patch shortly to strengthen Outlook’s defenses.

Meantime, there are fears of a rapid surge in infections as worldwide business reopens following public holidays yesterday and today.
