Europe’s Employer and Consumer Organizations Unite to Promote e-Confidence

FEDMA (the Federation of European Direct Marketing Associations) on Thursday hailed last month’s agreement by the European Consumers Organisation (BEUC) and the Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederation of Europe (UNICE) to adopt a European framework for e-commerce trustmark schemes.

The co-project is the first of its kind between the EU's industry and consumer bodies and aims to boost consumer trust in online transactions. It sets out a range of requirements for trustmark schemes complemented by a detailed system for approval and monitoring by an independent third party.

Enthused FEDMA director general Alastair Tempest: “FEDMA was one of the first industry groups [EC Health and Consumer Protection] commissioner David Byrne called in to discuss a co-regulatory process in 2000, together with consumer groups and his staff. And in the summer of 2001 we participated in a small task force set up by BEUC and UNICE to develop the trustmark scheme."

FEDMA has been the driving force behind several similar projects as part of its ‘Ring of Confidence’ initiative.
