Europe's Top Marketers Named

29 September 2008

FRANKFURT: Europe's top marketers were named at a ceremony in Germany last week, with stroller [push-chair] brand Bugaboo's marketing director Madeleen Klaasen sharing the honours with auto marque Fiat's chief marketing officer Luca de Meo, and Hannes Ametsreiter, cmo of Telekom Austria.

Klaasen – previously brand marketing manager of Nike Europe – was recognized for the luxury-focused ad campaign that made Bugaboo a favourite lifestyle accessory among the celebrity set. Sales have grown from $10.3 million (€7.1m; £5.6m) in 2003 to $103m in 2007.

Fiat's de Meo – who is also ceo of Alfa Romeo and Abrath sports cars – was credited for helping the Italian auto manufacturer to return to profit last year - for the first time since 2000.

His work included the relaunch of the Fiat 500, which centered around a digital campaign, including the 500 wants you website, which went online 500 days before the car officially went on sale.

Among Ametsreiter's achievements for Telekom Austria were merging its fixed and mobile networks, launching the discount brand Bob, and helping develop an IPTV platform.

Having been at the company twelve years, he also ran the company's push into Eastern Europe in 2005, where he oversaw a 50% increase in customer numbers from 2006–07.

The UK's Marketing Society's Hugh Burkitt said: "This event is establishing itself as the most prestigious European competition for CMOs."
