European ISP Giants Report Mixed Quarters

15 November 2002

Two of Europe’s leading ISPs posted mixed results for the third quarter.

Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Online, the continent’s biggest provider with 11.85 million subscribers, posted better-than-expected underlying profits of €35.6m ($35.9m; £22.6m) with a 42% year-on-year surge in revenues to €383m. However, after write-offs net losses more than doubled to €273m.

There were fewer positives at Italian rival Tiscali. Although it cut underlying losses from €44.8m in Q3 2001 to €3.6m, it saw revenues slip from €190.1m to €179.9m. The ISP has lost 600,000 customers over the last twelve months, but insists it will break even by the end of 2002.
