The Radio Authority has awarded Emap Digital Radio the digital licence for the Humberside region, reaching some 700,000 listeners across much of north-east England.
Emap’s transmissions will partially compete with those of national digital station Digital One, whose output will also be available in clusters of the same region.
Emap has proposed a diet of 24-hour music, including dance, easy listening, modern rock and adult contemporary music, according to the Authority.
Digital broadcasts can be received only by special receivers, including in-car. In addition to standard radio output, the technology can also transmit data services such as traffic and internet-style information
