EchoStar and Viacom Clash in CBS Spat

08 March 2004

US satellite operator EchoStar has threatened to drop the CBS network from its Dish platform over a row with the station's parent Viacom.

The two sides are engaged in a legal battle over a new deal to carry Viacom properties on Dish, America's second-largest satellite-TV platform. EchoStar claims Viacom is unfairly demanding that it transmit several other channels as part of any agreement involving CBS.

"This is extortion at the highest level," fumed EchoStar chairman Charles Ergen. "Viacom has crossed the line."
