EU Tobacco Ad Ban Threatened by New Amendments

Attempts to ban tobacco advertising across the European Union are under threat from new proposals issued by a committee of the European Parliament.

The Legal Affairs Committee has tabled a number of amendments to the Tobacco Advertising Directive currently undergoing the EU’s lengthy legislative process.

These include a proposal that the ban on tobacco ads be confined to cross-border marketing, leaving advertising in individual member states untouched.

Such suggestions, which will be discussed next month, could hold up the legislation for months or destroy it altogether – exactly their goal, according to some anti-smoking groups. “The intention of these amendments” the European Cancer League fumed, “is to wreck the entire directive.”
