EM.TV Appoints Kirch Executive to Sales Post

07 March 2001

The supervisory board of ailing German media group EM.TV has appointed an executive from its new partner Kirch Gruppe as board member for sales.

Rainer Hüther, previously chairman at Kirch New Media, takes responsibility for sales, marketing, merchandising and online operations with immediate effect, replacing Hans Vriens who resigned on account of “unbreachable differences” over EM.TV’s strategy.

Meanwhile, Kirch has struck a deal with German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF over the rights to screen the next two soccer World Cup tournaments in 2002 and 2006. Kirch owns the European rights to the events, but broke off talks with the publicly owned duo last month. However, following political pressure to resume negotiations, an agreement has been forged, although details have not yet been disclosed.
