High profile businessman Stelios Haji-Ioannou, owner of direct-sell airline easyJet and the easyEverything internet café chain, aims to take his barnstorming brands into both the US and Chinese markets.
The first easyEverything café is scheduled to open in Times Square, New York, in December with a roll-out to Washington, Chicago and Los Angeles planned for 2001. By then, boasts Haji-Ioannou, easyEverything will have sixty branches, with eleven new sites in Britain plus forty in prime European cities including Paris, Rome, Munich, Brussels and Antwerp.
Once the US beachhead has been consolidated, easyEverything will move into the major Far Eastern markets notably Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong.
Asia is also perceived as a lucrative untapped market for budget airlines such as easyJet. According to the sound-bite conscious Haji-Ioannou, the continent is home to “a billion people in need of cheap flights”.
Over 70% of easyJet seats are currently sold via its website.
