America's largest satellite TV broadcaster DirecTV is preparing to launch two types of video-on-demand services: one broadcast via satellite, the other delivered via broadband internet connections.
The satellite service, available sometime "over the next few months" will deliver a limited set of top movies to the hard drives of DirecTV customers with digital-video recorders.
The broadband VOD service, to be launched towards the end of the year, will offer around 2,000 subscription movies and other content.
It will be enabled via new high definition, DVR-equipped set-top boxes, executives told an investors' meeting in New York.
DirecTV, which is controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation and has more than 15 million subscribers, is exploiting new internet technology that allows content providers to offer programming direct to consumers via the web.
The system bypasses established distribution networks such as cable and satellite.
