One-half of British households will have digital television by 2005, compared to the total of seven million now, according to a new report by Jupiter MMXI.
However, says Jupiter, although more people will have access to the internet via their television than via their PCs, the value of online purchases made through computers will stand at £25.5 billion, far outstripping the £3.2bn spent through interactive TV.
The major reason for this difference is that consumers will continue to turn to their PCs when buying high-cost items such as holidays and cars. They will tend to use the TV for lower priced items such as CDs and take-aways.
The report also found that email via interactive TV has proved remarkably successful – 20% of iTV households use it regularly, while nearly one-third of BSkyB’s digital subscribers have registered for the service.
