Deutsche Telekom Threatens to Withdraw Flat-Rate Package

27 November 2000

German telephone network Deutsche Telekom yesterday announced it was mulling the withdrawal of the flat-rate internet subscription service offered by its web division T-Online.

The move is designed to block the telecommunications regulator RegTP’s order to offer all German ISPs flat-rate access to Deutsche Telekom’s network by February 1 [WAMN: 17-Nov-00].

A company spokesman said that Deutsche Telekom was assessing whether RegTP’s decision was legal and whether the grounds for it could be removed by withdrawing T-Online’s service. The group claim that enforcement of the order would slow its development of broadband services and overload the telephone network.
