The British Direct Marketing Association has announced the appointment of James Kelly to the newly created position of chief operating officer. Kelly, who joins the DMA on July 17, is currently director of marketing and business development at the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

He will assume responsibility for the day-to-day running of the association, freeing chief executive Colin Lloyd to focus on an international strategic role. Kelly is tasked with the efficient operation of the DMA as a business, and enhancing the quality of its services to members.

According to Judith Donovan CBE, DMA chair, Kelly was selected for his ability to combine trade association and marketing expertise. "The debate we always have is whether to have a direct marketer or somebody who understands trade associations. James stood out and it is a bonus that he has touched on both areas," said Donovan.
