Czechs Harmonize with EU Tobacco Ads Ban

26 March 2007

PRAGUE: Czech parliamentarians voted last week to comply with the EU-wide ban on tobacco advertising. But the country still faces the propspect of a multi-million euro fine from the European Commission for poor compliance hitherto.

The amendment to the regulations outlaws, for example, tobacco advertising at the motorbike Grand Prix for which organisers had negotiated an exception.

  • Separately, the country's decision to drop all commercials from its public television service Ceská Televize has prompted the formation of a new lobby group - the Alliance for Competition on the Television Advertising Market. It represents such brands as Coca-Cola, Danone and Nestlé.
