Christmas Bonus for Three Shops as KFC and Philips Switch

Christmas will be merrier yet for a trio of agencies – BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide and D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles. But it is a rueful Yule for the New York offices of Young & Rubicam and Euro RSCG Worldwide.

KFC, the former Kentucky Fried Chicken, now part of the Tricon Global Restaurants group, has moved its estimated $175 million account out of Young & Rubicam after four decades and into the New York office of BBDO Worldwide – albeit on an interim basis at present. BBDO also handles Tricon’s Pizza Hut chain.

"I have to wish the company well,” said John Swan, KFC account managing director at Y&R. “I hope they've made the right decision."

It’s champagne too at DDB Worldwide and D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, both of which are to share the $550 million to $600m account of Amsterdam-headquartered Philips Electronics.

Meanwhile, Alka-Seltzer is the order of the day at former Philips incumbent, Havas-owned Euro RSCG Worldwide (New York). "We are shocked and disappointed by this news," chairman and chief executive Bob Schmetterer told employees. "We were never told Philips was considering, or even talking to, other agencies."
