Chinese Consumer Confidence Falls

BEIJING: Consumer confidence in China fell during the first three months of 2007, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

Data based on consumer spending and savings activity indicated a quarter-on-quarter dip of 0.4 points to 95.8, albeit an improvement of 1.8 points on the same period in 2006.

And although improved employment and income levels led to a predicted growth of 15% in retail sales, this was offset by the difficulties facing many consumers seeking access to social security, healthcare, housing and education.

Further figures released by the bureau show consumer satisfaction with the economy rose slightly year-on-year to 91.9 points, while the Consumer Perspective Index, based on the public's assessment of future growth in the economy, rose by 2.3 points to 98.4 points.

The Entrepreneur Confidence Index, based on the assessment and predictions of business leaders, also hit a record high of 142 points.
