China’s Online Audience Reaches 87 Million

23 July 2004

China's online usage rose by 28% over the last year, with 87 million citizens now having access to the internet.

Although this represents only 6.7% of the population, consumers are being urged to log on for business and educational purposes.

Online commerce is overcoming the country's unique difficulties, such as poor delivery services and lack of credit cards, by offering alternative means of payment and improving distribution.

And it is paying off. Over half of Chinese internet users have expressed an interest in online shopping, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

The Center also found that broadband subscriptions have soared to 31 million, a rise of 79% over the last six months.
