China Bans TV Stars in Health Ads

02 June 2005

Television stars in China have been banned from advertising or endorsing health products.

Government authorities in Beijing have reportedly ordered local TV stations to stop broadcasting ads in which actors play consumers, patients or experts to talk about the effects of health, medicinal and cosmetics products.

The first TV commercial to come under fire featured a young actress claiming a drinkable calcium supplement made her young son smarter and taller.

China is expected to be the world's second biggest advertising market within ten years [WAMN: 26-Jan-05] but is also one of the most tightly controlled.
