Channel Five Stands Firm in UK TV Ads Market

LONDON: UK commercial television channel Five's revenues rose 53% in the first half of this year, reports its parent RTL Group.

However, once the effect of the European broadcasting giant's decision to take full control of the channel last July is stripped out, its earnings were down 0.6%.

Five made €15 million ($19.2m; £10.1m) in H1 - down from €16m in the same period last year.

A spokeswoman for RTL said the headline rise in revenue to €223m was "due to the impact of the full consolidation of Five." RTL bought United Business Media's stake in the channel.

The spokeswoman added that Five's share of a tight UK advertising market had grown from 8.4% in the first six months of 2005 to 8.5% in H1 this year.
