Carlton and Granada to Reduce OnDigital Expenditure

11 April 2001

Broadcasting groups Carlton Communications and Granada Media are planning to reduce expenditure on their terrestrial digital platform OnDigital.

The duo have spent over £300 million per year on attracting customers to OnDigital, with total expenditure estimated at £1.2 billion by the time the platform starts making a profit (forecast for 2003).

Carlton and Granada are thought to be looking at the rise of integrated digital TV sets as a means to cut expenditure – these do not require set-top boxes (currently offered to subscribers for free at a cost of £180 each), requiring only smartcards worth £20 each.
