The launch of a limited digital TV trial in 500 homes in Lewisham, south London. This should go live before Christmas with a planned roll-out across the country by June 1998. Some sixty channels will be available to the company’s 3.8m TV subscribers.

C&WC is also in negotiation with a number of US Internet services and software suppliers with a view to offering digital subscribers a range of interactive services including TV access to the Internet and home shopping. Microsoft’s WebTV is in the frame for a possible deal, as is Oracle subsidiary Navio Communications - a manufacturer of digital set-top boxes. Licensing discussions are also in progress with @Home Networks, a pioneer in high speed Internet access.
