MONEY-OFF coupons downloadable from the Web are to be launched in the UK later this year by US electronic retail marketing specialist Catalina Marketing. The service has already run for a year in the USA where it is used by a number of major supermarkets and fmcg manufacturers. Consumers simply access a retailer’s Website, print the money-off voucher/s of their choice, then redeem them against purchases of the specified products at their local outlet. Each coupon carries a specialised barcode for security and product identification reasons. This is recorded at the checkout for use with linked promotions for the product in question - for example, a coupon for a shampoo brand would trigger a special offer for that brand’s conditioner product. Says Catalina: ‘With this service the customer chooses where to shop and gets the money-off coupon they specifically want instead of it being pushed through the door.’
