Broadband Helps Wanadoo to Strong Q1 Growth

30 April 2003

French ISP Wanadoo – parent of UK provider Freeserve – has posted a strong first quarter after growth in advertising and broadband sales.

The group’s revenues surged 38% year-on-year to €567 million ($622m; £391m), leaving it on course for its full-year target of 25% to 30% growth. Its broadband subscriber base climbed to 1.6m, rising as a percentage of total internet access customers from 16.1% at the end of last year to 18.4%.

In the UK, Freeserve posted a 38% rise in narrowband subscribers to over one million at the end of March. Wanadoo is keen to cut the unit’s losses, which rose to €92m during 2002.

Online advertising growth, meanwhile, outpaced total revenue growth, rising 41% year-on-year in Britain and 229% in France.
