Britain’s manufacturing sector dashed hopes of a sustained upturn with a slight fall in May, new figures show.

According to the Office for National Statistics, output dipped 0.2% in May compared with the previous month, following an unexpected climb in April. Six of the thirteen manufacturing sub-sectors posted a fall – the worst being transport equipment, which fell 1.8% on a 4.9% decline in car production.

From March to May combined, manufacturing was down 0.2% on the three months to February.
