British Digital Radio Reach is Widening

Following a positive report from an independent review on the BBC's digital radio offering [WAMN: 21-0ct-2004], the UK state broadcaster is hearing further good news.

Latest figures from RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research), show record results for three new stations, Five Live Sports Extra, BBC 6 Music and BBC 7 .

The sports station saw listener totals rise to 420,000 in the last quarter, up from 312,000 over last year.

The music station has reached 228,000 listeners, a rise of 48% on last year; while BBC 7 speech station, which features drama, comedy and children's shows, has posted 404,000 listeners, up from 236,000 a year ago.

The figures show a slight fall in the number of people listening through their TVs but a rise in those tuning-in via the internet.

The commercial radio sector has also posted increases in its listening figures.

Says Alison Winter, of the Commercial Radio Companies Association: "New listeners are tuning into our services thanks to the emergence of new digital stations as well as those local analogue stations now available UK-wide via digital platforms."
