Britain’s Leading Supermarket Enlists ONdigital in Direct-Sell Venture

10 May 2001

Tesco, the UK’s largest and most profitable supermarket chain, aims to beef-up its fledgling online home delivery operation via a joint venture with ONdigital - the Granada/Carlton-owned digital TV platform, shortly to be rebranded ITV Digital [WAMN: 23-Apr-01].

The new dTV partnership goes live next Tuesday. Says John Browett, chief executive of the Tesco online service: “Ondigital enables access through the television to the internet and you can do the same thing that everyone else can do with a PC. Therefore you don't have to go to the expense and if you are nervous about the PC you don't need it."

The announcement comes just days after Open, BSkyB’s rival home shopping service, faces absorption into its sibling online unit [WAMN: 04-May-01].
