Big Impact for UK Broadsheets' Tabloid Format

The small but perfectly formed versions of the UK's quality newspapers are making big waves in sales.

Both The Independent and The Times introduced compact (tabloid) editions within the last year and have since seen their circulations rise, while sales of broadsheet rivals have fallen.

The latest data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations revealed The Times' circulation increased by 4.7% year-on-year (and 1.39% month-on-month for June).

The Independent's sales "exceeded all our expectations" according to Ivan Fallon, ceo of Independent News & Media UK. Circulation soared by 18.84% year-on-year (and 0.22% month-on-month), the "highest UK Newstrade sales in six years."

This compares with a drop in sales for the exclusively broadsheet quality papers: circulations of The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times respectively fell by 5.12%, 1.47% and 5.26% year-on-year.

• Meanwhile, the fortunes of mid-market tabloids were mixed. Sales of the Daily Express were up by 2.06%, whilst the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and The Sun all saw their circulations fall slightly -- by 0.74%, 0.69% and 0.37% respectively.
