Pan-European broadcasting giant RTL Group has appointed a new chief executive to replace Didier Bellens who resigned last week to join Belgium’s state-owned telecoms business.
Taking over the Bertelsmann-controlled broadcaster is Austrian-born Gerhard Zeiler (48), said to have close links with the Mohn family which rules the roost at the German-based global media giant. He is also a trustee (along with Bertelsmann ceo Gunter Theilen ) of the Bertelsmann Foundation, the share-owning charity set up by Reinhard Mohn in the 1970s.
RTL, 90%-owned by Bertelsmann and Europe’s largest broadcaster, is the biggest single asset in the group’s global portfolio.
