Bertelsmann Pledges $2m to New York Emergency Services

13 September 2001

German media colossus Bertelsmann is donating $2 million to New York’s fire and police departments as a mark of sympathy following Tuesday’s terrorist attack.

The money, to be split equally between the two services, is an initial gesture of support, said chairman/ceo Thomas Middelhoff, with further pledges expected later.

Continued Middelhoff: “As a media corporation we will do everything in our power to use our journalistic work in sixty countries to stop the seeds of violence at their breeding ground.”

Bertelsmann’s New York offices on Times Square were unaffected by the attack.
