Benatti, Two Down in Playoff Against Sorrell, Wins Reprieve

01 August 2006

Marco Benatti, the former 'country head' of WPP Italia, has won a final chance to sue WPP Group ceo Sir Martin Sorrell in the Italian courts for criminal defamation.

Benatti, who appealed against the decision of a Milan prosecutor that Sorrell had no case to answer, learned at the weekend that a hearing has been scheduled for October 4 to decide whether Sir Martin and Luca Barabino, head of a public relations group acting for WPP in Italy, should be brought to trial.

Benatti accuses Sorrell and Barabino of spreading defamatory news to the press regarding an earlier default judgment against the Italian in London. He is also suing WPP for unfair dismissal in the Verona civil court.
