Beijing Olympics Spark Web Broadcasting Frenzy

BEIJING: A trio of leading Chinese web portals - Sina, Netease, and Tencent – have inked a deal with China Central Television, the official state broadcaster of the Beijing Olympic Games, to allow all events to be shown over the internet.

The companies say these will be the first Games to be broadcast via the web on such a large scale and are expected to generate a huge increase in online advertising revenues.

CCTV is to air 3,800 hours of Olympics coverage across eight channels between August 8 and August 24, according to general manager Wang Wenbin

"The new media broadcasts of the Olympics, the first time in the history of the global event, will allow even more people access to the event."

The official internet sponsor of the Games is, which reportedly paid the $30 million (€18.8m; £14.9m) for rights to host the Olympics' official website and use its logo.
