BT and UN&M Put LineOne Up for Auction

01 December 2000

LineOne, the ISP jointly owned by British Telecommunications and United News & Media, is no longer deemed to meet their strategic ambitions and has been put up for sale.

But, industry observers imply, “strategic ambitions” could be a euphemism for cash - a desirable commodity both to debt-strapped BT and UN&M which is restructuring after the sale of its TV and national press interests.

LineOne claims over 1.4 million registered users and is valued by analysts at more than £150m. However, in the real world of the marketplace, this figure may be optimistic judged by the experience of Freeserve, Britain’s largest ISP. It put itself up for auction in June but has yet to find a buyer.
