BSkyB Pushes HDTV, Posts Profits Increase

ISLEWORTH, London: BSkyB, the UK satellite services provider, has announced a plan to push its high-definition TV platform, slashing the price of its Sky+ HD set-top box from £150 ($215; €167) to £49, having also posted £147m in profits in the second half of last year.

According to research conducted by BSkyB, over half of 188,000 new HD customers took up a subscription based on personal recommendation.

Due to the bandwidth advantages of satellite, Sky's platform is also able to host 31 HD channels, and boasts 11,000 hours of HD programming a month.

By contrast, digital services Freeview and Freesat will host a maximum of four and two HD channels respectively, while BT and Virgin Media's services are limited by broadband speeds.

BSkyB's revenues rose by 6% to £2.6bn in the second half of last year, adding 171,000 new customers, with profits, when omitting the writedown of its 17.9% share of ITV, rising 9% to £335m.
