BET Channel Heads for UK

21 June 2007

LONDON: US cable TV channel Black Entertainment Television is to begin broadcasting in the UK after getting approval from media regulator Ofcom.

The channel, owned by Viacom, will be known as BET UK and is currently in talks with a number of broadcasters, including satellite giant BSkyB.

As well as importing hit US shows, the channel will produce programmes made exclusively for the UK market, but it has not yet been decided whether it will be free-to-air or subscription-based.

BET International svp and general manager Michael Armstrong said: "We will super-serve the black British, Caribbean and African communities, but we also have programming that is acceptable to all lovers of black culture."
