BBC Holds Talks with US Cable Firms over News Channel

28 September 2004

In a move to boost its distribution across the USA, the BBC is meeting top US cable companies with a view to distributing its BBC World news channel.

The news follows recent reports that it is considering a sale of its Worldwide commercial sales and publishing arm [WAMN: 08-Sep-04] and the corporation has held talks with US media conglomerate Time Warner on both accounts.

Cable operator Comcast and Cox Communications have also spoken to the BBC about distributing its commercially-funded news and information TV channel.

Although admitting to holding such talks, the BBC remained tight-lipped and refused to "give any further details due to commercial sensitivities."
