Australian online advertising surges

21 May 2004

The burgeoning online advertising market is expected to top A$300 million ($208m; €174m; £117m) this year, according to industry estimates.

Online revenues rose from $140m in 2002 to $236m in 2003 with advertising demand matching last year's, according to internet specialists nine msn and f2 online.

"We're in the middle of the advertising cycle and we're seeing strong growth across the board," said Martin Hoffman, chief executive of nine msn.

Similarly f2 boss Nick Leeder reported a 60% increase in this year's classified and paid search advertising, with display ads posting a 30% boost.

His view was that the market "will probably make it to $300m this year. Every year I think 'this will be the year it will stop', and every year I'm wrong,"he said.
