Australian Job Ads Record Numeric decrease

08 July 2008

SYDNEY: The economic downturn Down Under is beginning to bite as the volume of job ads, both online and in newspapers, slipped again in June by three percent, reports Australian finance giant ANZ.

This follows a slide of 1.7% in May.

Ads in city newspapers fell 3.5% in June. In trend terms, print ads registered a 2.4% fall, or a 17.9% drop year-on-year.

In the same month online ads fell 2.9%, edging down 0.5% trendwise but still 11.7% higher compared with June 2007.

Says the ANZ head of Australian economics Sally Auld: "This is consistent with the trend easing in employment growth since the start of the year.

"Employment did fall in absolute terms in May, but given this was the first decline in eighteen months, it is unlikely that this foreshadows a sustained downturn in employment."
