Arab Nation Mulls ban on Social Network Dating Pages

26 February 2008

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: A crackdown in the Middle East on what can and cannot be accessed by web users is likely to curb certain sections of social networking sites.

The Internet Penetration Policy, currently under consideration by the UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, would not allow Facebook and MySpace members to see dating pages.

However, a TRA spokesperson claimed the regulator wants to encourage cultural interaction in today's globalised world, and did not intend to deny access to websites that are social portals.
