America's Largest Newspaper Publisher Adds to Ad Gloom

13 October 2006

MACLEAN, Virginia: Third quarter figures from newspaper publisher Gannett, owner of USA Today and 89 other US titles, has done little to boost the flagging confidence of the industry.

The company reports that revenue rose 2.7% in Q3, but a 3.9% drop in September newspaper ad income compounded a 1.8% decline in August and a smaller drop in July.

The company, however, does offer a glimmer of hope to a similarly ailing UK industry and says there are signs of recovery at its British Newsquest business, which accounts for around 15% of total revenue.
