Africa to Host 2010 Soccer World Cup

16 March 2001

FIFA, the governing body for world soccer, revealed yesterday its choice of Africa as host of the prestigious and immensely lucrative World Cup tournament in 2010.

Somewhat curiously, the news inched out via FIFA’s website after the body denied earlier reports. According to the online statement: “At today's first part of its regular meeting in Zurich the FIFA executive committee agreed - to details that are yet to be determined - that the rotation of the World Cup, due to begin in 2010, would start in Africa."

It will be the first-ever occasion on which the impoverished continent will be able to sup at the groaning table of the media, marketing and sponsorship-fest. Hot favourite to host the tournament is South Africa, which narrowly lost-out to Germany for the 2006 contest.

According to Danny Jordaan of the South African Football Association, the opportunity transcends a mere sporting event: “It will give the African continent much more hope and we believe it will give us a better slice of the action on the world stage.”
