Adidas Earns Stripes, Decides Europe's Top Court

14 April 2008

LUXEMBOURG CITY: The European Court of Justice, the EU's highest legislative body, last week upheld Adidas' claim that trademark protection for its three-stripe logo extends to two stripes.

The case was brought after the German sportswear giant sued a number of Dutch retailers selling clothing embellished with just two stripes.

The retailers claimed that simple stripe emblems should be available to all – a contention with which the ECJ disagreed.
