Ad Age Names Nintendo 'Marketer of the Year'; Peers Disagree

NEW YORK: US adland bible Advertising Age has named Nintendo US 'Marketer of the Year', honoring the Japanese giant for the concept and successful launch of its Wii video game system.

Enthused one judge, Julie Shumaker, vp-sales at in-game agency Double Fusion: "They have absolutely changed the industry, They brought people who don't consider themselves gamers into gaming. Data show people ... still don't consider themselves gamers -- and they own a Wii. Sheer marketing brilliance."

Runners-up in the AdAge awards were Apple, Nike, Al Gore, Geico and Unilever.

While on another playing field - the ANA annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona - Apple was judged by its marketing peers to be America's top marketer, thanks to its instant-icon iPhone brand.
