According to internet economy research group www.consult, Australian online advertising revenues soared by 46% from A$15 million to A$22 million in the March quarter.

Says a www.consult media analyst: “There is a lot more confidence in advertising online. There are still a number of advertisers experimenting with the online medium, but there is a bit more confidence with those who have been experimenting and also with the top twenty advertisers."

Over eight hundred Australian companies advertised online, up from 400 a year ago. The two biggest spenders were Commonwealth Bank of Australia (excluding its discount brokerage unit) and the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group. The twosome, respectively Australia's second and fourth largest banks, spend around A$100,000 a month in online advertising.

Reports wwwc: “The key advertising categories driving online spend are banking and financial services, followed by retail, classifieds, technology and media.”
