LONDON: Launched a mere eleven month ago, al-Jazeera International's English-language TV news service is now watched in over 100 million homes worldwide.

Encouraged, it has now set its sights on the US, Indian and Chinese markets with the appointment of its first director of global distribution.

The news channel, based in Qatar, originally began broadcasting ten years ago as a satellite service for the Arab world, while its English-language version was launched last year. Both are now carried by major satellite and cable services.

The network, which also offers sport and documentary channels, has appointed Phil Lawrie, former vp of commercial distribution and digital media at Turner Broadcasting System, to the new position of director of global distribution

Abdullah Al Najjar, the commercial director of the al-Jazeera Network, said: "The US, as well as India and China, represent the next stage in our global distribution efforts.

"These are sophisticated markets that have a need and desire for international news, and I am delighted that someone as experienced, creative and passionate as Phil is leading the change."
