A dispute at the state-owned Canadian Broadcasting Corporation shows no sign of being quickly resolved.

The lockout is the culmination of fifteen months negotiation over CBC's desire to hire increasing numbers of contract and parttime employees - a move strongly opposed by the union, the Canadian Media Guild.
The CBC operates two national broadcast television networks — CBC Television in English, and La Télévision de Radio-Canada in French, plus several radio stations. In addition it operates cable TV channels, satellite channels, and a digital pay audio service (Galaxie) with 45 music channels.
The CBC is majority funded by the Canadian government, but also competes for advertising dollars with the private networks.
